  • Discover the Gothic architecture of Old St Paul’s Cathedral – a completely wooden structure in the heart of the city. If you are interested in churches you could then visit the New St Paul’s Cathedral just across the road.
  • Visit the 19th century wooden cottages in Thorndon, birthplace of New Zealand’s most famous author, Katherine Mansfield (B.1888)

  • A visit to Weta Cave to see where the Lord of the Rings was made. On the way back a drive around the Miramar peninsular, you may spot penguins and seals as you head around Wellington’s Southern coastline.
  • Visit the Wellington Museum housed in an historic 1892 Bond Store.

  • Drive to Makara West Winds Farm with over 60 wind turbines atop coastal hills

  • Visit Zealandia – a wildlife sanctuary where 225ha of forest is being restored.

  • For cricket fans visit the Basin Reserve and the New Zealand Cricket Museum

  • Have a close encounter at Wellington Zoo.

Kapiti Coast

Enjoy the stunning coastal drive to the Kapiti Coast which is named after the prominent landmark Kapiti Island.  You will travel through seaside townships, horticultural land, past market gardens and see sights including:

  • The world famous Southward Car Museum housing one of Australasia’s largest collections of over 4,000 antique and unusual cars.
  • The Tramway Museum for a look at Wellington’s history through restored wooden trams.

  • A visit to Tuatara Brewery, Wellington’s famous and oldest craft brewery.

  • Lavender Creek Farm, home to over 300 types of lavender and producer of high quality lavender oils.
  • Trinity Farm, the heritage rose nursery.

  • Maori and local arts and crafts.

  • Explore Queen Elizabeth Park with its relatively unchanged sand dunes and wetlands.

  • The bird sanctuary Nga Manu Nature Reserve.

Wairarapa

Escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and be driven across the breathtaking Rimutaka Mountain Pass entering the colonial towns of the Wairarapa to:

  • Drive to Martinborough the gateway to boutique wineries, vineyards, wine tours and wine tasting.

  • See the only remaining Fell Locomotive Museum in the world.

  • Be driven through the unique crayfish and paua fishing village of Ngawi to the seal colony.

  • Cape Palliser to the classic Cape Palliser Lighthouse and enjoy the stunning views.

  • See the amazing rock formations at Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve, one of the sites used in The Lord of the Rings. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

  • Visit Stonehenge Aotearoa for the views and the incredible acoustics.

  • A spectacular drive to Castlepoint the walk up to Castlepoint Lighthouse to appreciate the natural scenery.  There are 253 steps to the top of this lighthouse.

  • Visit the outdoor Cobblestones Museum to learn about the town’s local history.
